Pontiaction and the RA V years

this is an article on the RAV car in its later years. It was at a race at E town and the Rodder and super stock editor stopped and did a story on it.  This is the story that put an end to Ponatication racing!!!  the cat was let out of the bag about the RAV aluminum block being prepared by george delorean at Diamond automotive. GM was Pissed and when Stephens went to pick it up they said, RAV aluminum engine??? we dont have any engines for you and your not in racing anymore.

Bill tells me of the day when the RAV aluminum engine showed up and one of the guys. Gil Bertrand I think, Carried it over to him on his shoulder.Bill still had the General Dynamics cam in the box for this car when we

Pontiaction History III

This decal was found up under the dash of the RAIV firebird in about 1994!I was on the phone with Tom demauro from HPP magazine at the time.
it was lost at the SS nationals when Bill did a dry hop in the pits, it slid back and under the dash. I still have them in my scrap book.

Its hard to see but in this article by Ro mcgonegal the RAIV firebird sits on the starting line in front of these cars about to race a nova. Its from a superstock and drag illustrated article in the 90's.  Oddly the article text reads: "the west coast influence" but the pictures are all of east coast cars including the whitney and kutsavage dog catcher car also from connecticut.

Pretty sure this was from an E

Much thanks to Garret Monde!!!

A color picture from the Hemi car race! earlier in the run, the bird was already out on him.

Bill standing next to the car in the pits for a photo op.

A really good shot of the pontiac arrowhead emblazoned in the paint scheme paying homage to its roots. Thats lace paint on the hood roof and trunk. The lettering on the fenders were rockets taking off with flames below them, remember these were the days of the race to the moon!

Pontiaction Racing History

Seen here is the 1969 firebird, C/S Jr stock car. It moved up a class from the D/S Jr stocker.
This was the first day back from the paint shop, if you look close you can see the rags in the RAIV scoops, the RAIV pans and flappers were already gone! Engineering told them they didn't work as good as open air and to can them.

A quick burnout caught on film.  The RAIV 4 speed 3.90 geared C/stocker getting ready to make a pass!
the car ran 11.93 at 118 MPH It was driven by Bill Eckstrom and later Tom MC Ennis. It was said to have raced rockys Goat for a new RAIV engine in the finals.

Here the 69 RAIV firebird racing against a hemi car with fenderwell headers, The crowd is on

Pontiaction Racing was born at Stephen Pontiac, which was located on Riverside avenue in Bristol CT.  It was the brainstorm of Bill Eckstrom and Stephen Barberino owner of Stephens Pontiac.

(All proceeds from clickable links on this site will go towards the restoration of the 69 firebird.  One of the missing pieces for the restoration is a good picture of the trunk area on the car and its design of the lace paint job.

About Us

October 9, 2009 Uncategorized

The Pontiaction project was an idea of William J England in 1994. As a toddler, William spent his weekends watching his dad washing , cleaning and doing odd jobs on  his pride and joy, a 1967 Pontiac Firebird 400 Ram Air which was beefed up by Mickey Thompson Enterprises. The love for American  Muscle had  set in and roots were well set by the age of 13.

By this time (1987) the only change that the 1967 Firebird 400 had undergone was a colour change in the early 1970's from the factory Starlight Black to a 60s/70s golden colour. It was time to get things straight and put the colour right. William set out to learn all possible information that was Pontiac related. Such a task in 1987 was no easy job. There was still no

A restoration project is no easy task. Restoring a classic Pontiac can be fun yet still not easy !! The sources of information are many and spread across the web. Google helps us bring them closer but alas not together. The Pontiaction project is the brain child that intends to bring all (or a good part of it) together in this website and eventual blog and forum.

Through our research and that our readers we intend to put together all things Pontiac in this site. All input and feedback is welcome. The more information and data sources we can provide will help our Pontiacs last longer to be enjoyed for many generations to come.
